This detailed topographic map offers a glimpse into the harsh and unforgiving terrain of the Pripyat Marshes, a vast, lowland region (around 20,000 square miles) straddling modern-day Belarus and Ukraine. Despite the presence of a handful of rail lines and established roads, the territory’s numerous peat bogs, marshes, flood plains, and scattered heavy forests made transit by large armies next to impossible. It did offer excellent cover for partisan or guerrilla activities, which irregular Russian forces used to full advantage. The map was published in 1916 by the Cartographic Department of the Deputy General Staff of the German Army. This example may have been owned by a veteran. Hastily scribbled pencil on the back, only partially legible, mentions dangerous places from which one was warned to stay away.
