The U.A.R. extends a sincere and hearty welcome to all Americans regardless of Race, Faith, or Color. – Text, verso. This relatively simple pictorial map provides a stylized overview of the many historic locations of interest available along Egypt’s Nile Valley. Text and photographs on the verso contrast the ancient attractions with modern amenities like the Nile Hilton Hotel and the Cairo Tower. Dated 1961/1962 based on the completion of the latter landmark, in addition to the impending completion of the new Cairo Airport (just in time for the anniversary of the Revolution). The United Arab Republic (UAR) was a short-lived political union between Egypt and Syria, established in 1958 as part of a broader movement toward Arab nationalism. Led by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the UAR aimed to create a pan-Arab state, but tensions arose due to Egypt’s dominant control over Syrian affairs. In 1961, Syria withdrew from the union after a military coup, effectively dissolving the UAR, though Egypt continued using the name until 1971. The omission of Syria from the map may be a part of a broader ‘rebranding’ effort aimed at drawing American tourists.
