Vibrant printed color outlines territory directly controlled by the British Crown (pink), ‘Native Feudatory and Protected States'(yellow), and independent nations/European coastal enclaves (orange). Railways, both completed and under construction, are shown – these avenues for material and personnel transport were vital to maintaining British control over the massive territory, extending far north into Kashmir.
