This ‘new map’ of Tokyo’s popular Shinjuku district was published in a 1972 edition of the Japanese manga, Play Comic. At the time, the region was the Mecca of Japan’s counterculture scene, though increasingly tall skyscrapers were redefining the skyline. Popular nightclubs, clothing shops, record stores, and restaurants are noted throughout the playful image.
