Shinjuku Playmap No 31

$22.99 $35.63
This ‘new map’ of Tokyo’s popular Shinjuku district was published in a 1972 edition of the Japanese manga, Play Comic. At the time, the region was the Mecca of Japan’s counterculture scene, though increasingly tall skyscrapers were redefining the skyline. Popular nightclubs, clothing shops, record stores, and restaurants are noted throughout the playful image. From ComicVine, “Play Comic debuted in 1968 as one of the first major Japanese comic magazines aimed at “young men” (other similarly-marketed magazines to debut in this launch window included Big Comic, Weekly Manga Action and Young Comic). Like several of the others, it was released twice a month.” The first ‘Playmap’ appeared in 1969. Source: Rectoverse Blog; Comic Vine
