Birds-Eye View of the Suez Canal Connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean

This engaging woodcut offers a speculative bird’s-eye view of the finished Suez Canal, one of the most ambitious engineering feats of the 19th century. Although work was well underway by the time this print was published in the June 3, 1865, edition of Harper’s Weekly, thousands of tons of earth remained to be excavated before the waterway would finally link the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. The geography is purposefully distorted to emphasize the various components of the route, including the massive artificial dredges and the strategic use of natural lakes. The composition is particularly striking for its cultural contrast: tranquil vignettes of Arab traders along the upper margin juxtapose sharply with the frenetic industrial activity depicted below.
