RAD Arbeitsgau 1 Ostpreußen (Reich Labor Service, Labor District 1, East Prussia) Tradition Cap Badge RAD = Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service) The RAD cap badge was issued to those performing duties in the RAD and worn on the left side of the RAD cloth cap. Each Arbeitsgau (Labor District) had their own variation; this one is District One (East Prussia). DESCRIPTION: Constructed in two-pieces Obverse: Silver-Bronzed w/black & white enamels. Reverse: Plain w/no maker mark & repaired or replaced pin back. HISTORY: The RAD was "officially" established on 26 June 1935 as the sole (and compulsory) labor service of Germany. Its purpose was to aid the crippling economy, slow unemployment, as well as, indoctrinate its members with NSDAP ideology. It also had a role in militarizing the German population. Of the 40 Labor Districts, 17 wore their own unique cap badges, made uniquely and of metal, often with colorful enamel. They were introduced at varying time periods between 1934 & 1942.
